Samaria Gorge National Park protects a steep slice of western Crete, from the White Mountains towards Agia Roumeli on the south coast. Its best-known visit is a long walk down the gorge. The view at the start is only part of the day: you also need a way home from the sea.

Check access first, then settle the walk and its transport. A tour listing or ferry ticket does not confirm that the park is open. The full crossing ends away from its mountain start, while a southern visit returns to the coast. Choose the walk first. Fit the travel legs and overnight stay around that choice.

Current access at Samaria Gorge National Park

The NECCA ticket portal says the gorge remains closed from both entrances pending inspections. No reopening date is given. This was checked on 15 October 2026, Europe/Athens local date. Treat it as a dated observation and check the portal again before leaving your base.

The notice covers Xyloskalo in the north and Agia Roumeli in the south. A shorter walk from the coast is therefore not a way around this closure. Nor does a boat arriving in Agia Roumeli grant permission to enter the park. The village and the controlled gorge entrance are different destinations.

Do not use a general May-to-October season as proof of access on a particular day. Tourism pages describe a usual visiting season, while NECCA can announce a closure within it. An old review or an available excursion cannot cancel that instruction. A weather forecast does not give permission to enter either.

If your trip depends on the gorge, keep a spare day or a different activity in mind. Check the terms of your transport and lodging separately. Closure of the park does not by itself tell you what another business will refund.

Where the park is

Samaria lies in the Chania region of Crete. The northern approach is through the Omalos area to Xyloskalo. The gorge leads south to Agia Roumeli, beside the Libyan Sea. Visit Greece, the national tourism site, describes this mountain-to-sea setting.

Those place names help make sense of transport searches. Chania is a common starting base, Omalos is the mountain approach, and Agia Roumeli is the coastal finish. Chora Sfakion, often called Sfakia in ferry information, and Sougia are onward coastal ports. They are not alternative names for the gorge entrance.

Avoid putting only “Samaria” into a route planner and following the first pin. Match the pin to the entrance you intend to use. A car route to the north will not solve the return from a walk that ends on the coast.

The protected park is larger than the path most visitors walk. A route shown within the wider White Mountains does not necessarily form part of the usual crossing. Keep your day plan tied to the permitted route and the latest instructions at the entrance.

Stone, trees and the former village

The gorge is a place to read slowly. High rock walls stand above wooded slopes and a stony channel. The geology guide explains the rock and the forces that act on it, without treating every visible crack as a dated event.

Samaria also has a human past. The former village and churches are part of the story, rather than an empty backdrop to a hike. The history guide separates documented settlement and protection from legends that need more care.

For church details, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania's Samaria project is a useful primary source. It describes work on five churches within the national park. Its heritage information should be read alongside, rather than instead of, the current entrance notice.

The narrow passages called Portes or the Iron Gates are a famous part of the gorge. Their name describes a rock passage, not a separate ticketed attraction reached by road. Decide how they fit into an allowed walk before planning a visit around a photograph.

Protection labels need care too. The Gorge of Samaria entry on UNESCO's Tentative List records a Greek submission. A Tentative List entry is not an inscription on the World Heritage List. You do not need a superlative or an inflated label to appreciate this place.

Choose the walk before buying transport

The full north-to-south crossing and a southern out-and-back visit are different days. The full walk starts high and finishes near the sea. A partial visit from Agia Roumeli starts and ends on the southern side. Both depend on the entrance rules in force at the time.

Choice What you need to arrange Main limit
Full crossing Travel to Xyloskalo, the walk, onward boat and land transfer The finish is away from the start
Southern partial visit Travel to Agia Roumeli, permission to enter and a return boat or stay It covers only part of the gorge
Village stay Boat access and suitable lodging Staying by the sea does not confirm park entry
Different gorge That trail's own access and transport checks Samaria's notice does not describe another trail

Downhill does not mean effortless. Long stretches on uneven stones can be tiring even if the route loses height overall. Think about your recent walking, your footwear and the pace of the slowest person in your party. Do not use a fast online walking time as your personal target.

The hike planning guide covers the route and equipment for a full crossing. It is the right next page if you have yet to choose between the long walk and a shorter southern visit.

Pack food and water, with sun protection and your return details. Check official advice about facilities rather than assuming that every marked rest point supplies what you need. Leave enough room in the day for pauses and the walk beyond the controlled park exit.

Build the return into the outward plan

A useful Samaria plan starts with the finish. Look at the boat you could use from Agia Roumeli, then the land transfer from its arrival port. Only after that should you settle your outward trip to the mountains. All the legs must work on the same date.

The transport guide explains the Sfakia–Agia Roumeli route and the other connections for a gorge day. Use the actual ANENDYK routes and KTEL Chania–Rethymno services. Check the date and direction, then the boarding point. We do not treat a general route page as a current departure board.

If you drive to Xyloskalo, your car stays there while you walk south. Write down how you would get back to it. A boat to a coastal port solves only the sea leg. It does not return you to the mountain parking area by itself.

Keep bookings and confirmations where you can read them without a signal. Save the names of both your arrival and departure ports. A similar spelling on two websites can be harmless, but a different port is a different transport plan.

If the return chain fails before the day starts, fix it before entering the trail. If weather or service disruption affects the coast, follow the carrier's current instructions. Do not assume an extra boat or bus will appear because hikers need it.

Tours and places to sleep

An escorted trip can take some transport work off your hands. Its main benefit may be the pickup and return arrangements, rather than a guide who stays beside you on the trail. Read the tour comparison for the questions that distinguish those services.

Ask what the stated price includes. Park admission, ferry travel, meals and a personal walking guide are separate questions. A single payment can cover several of them, but the word “tour” alone proves none of them. Get the departure point and cancellation terms in writing.

Your overnight base affects the morning as much as the room. A stay near the north approach has a different purpose from a stay on the south coast. Chania can suit a wider trip, while a coastal overnight may make sense if you want time after the walk. Choose for the travel pattern you can actually use.

The Agia Roumeli and nearby bases guide helps compare those choices. Before reserving a remote stay, check arrival access, check-in arrangements and what happens if the boat cannot operate. A room booking is not a transport guarantee.

Other gorge plans

The Agia Irini guide is a starting point for a different western Crete walk. It also explains when an Imbros visit may fit better. Each has its own start, finish and return problem. A shorter route still needs a weather and access check.

Choose an alternative because it fits your day, rather than assuming that every gorge is interchangeable. If conditions affect the whole region, switching to another steep valley may not solve the reason Samaria is closed. Use that destination's current authority and transport information.

Common questions

Is this the official park website?

No. This is an independent visitor guide. NECCA supplies the current access instructions and the official ticket portal. Transport companies supply their own service terms. Use our pages to organise those checks, then use the named authority or carrier for permission, tickets and date-specific details.

Can a ticket prove the gorge is open?

A ticket and permission to enter on the day are separate matters. Read the latest NECCA notice before travel and follow the staff at the entrance. A saved receipt, a tour confirmation or an old seasonal timetable does not establish that the route is open now.

Is Agia Roumeli the end of the hike?

It is the coastal destination normally associated with the north-to-south crossing. Distinguish the controlled park exit from the village and the boat boarding point. Your day continues after leaving the park, so allow for that part when matching the walk to a ferry departure.

Should I book a tour or go alone?

Compare the whole transport chain and the help you want. A tour can arrange transfers, but you must check its guide scope and separate costs. Independent travel gives you more booking control while leaving you to match the services. Neither option overrides a closure or removes the demands of the walk.

Verdict on visiting Samaria Gorge National Park

Begin with the access notice, choose a permitted walk and make the return work before you pay for the rest. Samaria Gorge National Park rewards a plan built around its two very different ends. Save the official notice alongside your route. Keep your dated transport confirmations with them so that each decision rests on the right source.
